Jean-Luc Godard was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival tonight, in a ceremony which saw Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda take the top honour. In the words of the festival Jury president Cate Blanchett, the Godard movie “almost sat apart from the other films, almost outside time and space”. There’s more here.
It’s a strange honour for Godard, and one which is somewhat difficult to take in. On the one hand, it’s nice to see him recognised, but on the other it’s surreal to think that he hasn’t been awarded the top prize before now.
