Varda In Liverpool. And Elsewhere.

Agnes Varda is amongst the 36 artists whose work will appear at next year’s Liverpool Biennial. The festival runs for around three months from July 14.

It’s a period of hyper-activity for the Belgian-born French filmmaker, who is still riding high on a wave of great praise for her latest film, Visages Villages, a collaboration with the photographer/artist JR. That film is due for UK release in the near future, while a catalogue of her existing work is due in December on Blu-ray from Artificial Eye. Varda is also the current cover star of the latest issue of Film Comment, while she appears with JR on the latest episode of Peter Labuza’s always-excellent Podcast The Cinephiliacs. And let’s not forget that Varda became the first female-filmmaker to be given an honorary Academy Award over the summer.
